Triple i 2019 – Keith Hawton

Mednarodno priznani predavatelji spregovorijo o raziskovanju, intervencijah in postvenciji ob samomoru.

Vedno siščite nasvete in skušajte vzpostaviti dober delovni odnos z izkušenim supervizorjem.

Prof. Keith Hawton is one of the leading experts in the field of research and prevention of suicide. He is a professor of psychiatry at the University of Oxford Department of psychiatry and the director of Centre for suicide research.

He is a Senior investigator of the National Institute for Health Research. Focus of his research is suicide and self-harm, especially their extent, nature and causes, suitability and efectiveness of different methods of treatment and prevention. He dedicates special focus to researching suicide and self-harm in young people, clinical management of self-harm and media impact on self-harm.

By using epidemiological and interview approaches, he investigates trends of self-harm and suicide and discovers main contributing factors. This approach to research has had major impact on developing specific treatments and prevention initiatives, which have shown as effective in reducing further self-harm and suicide risk.

Prof. Hawton has received many awards in the fields of research and prevention of suicide. In 2012 he was awarded the Life Achievement Award for lifetime achievement and outstanding contribution in research, treatment and teaching in the field of suicidology and suicide prevention. In 2013 he received the Morselli Award for outstanding and enduring achievements in the science and art of suicide prevention by the International Academy for Suicide Research (IASR). He also received a Research Award by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), the Louis I. Dublin Award by the American Association of Suicidology (AAS) and the Erwin Stengel Research Award by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP).

At the Triple i 2019 conference he will speak about suicidal behaviour and self-harm in young people.

Prof. Hawton’s message to young researchers, professionals, students:

This is a fascinating field in which you will constantly be discovering new facts, some of which will present new questions for research. There are many approaches to research on suicidal behaviour, at least one or more likely multiple approaches will appeal to you. Follow those with which you feel most comfortable, but don’t avoid those that are more challenging. Always seek advice and try to establish a working arrangement with an experienced supervisor. Take every opportunity you can to attend meetings of fellow researchers and maximise your use of research networks. Remember that research collaborations are always more productive than pursuing solitary research.
